Messina is the third largest city on the island of Sicily, Italy and is the capital of the province of Messina. Messina has been the premier port of Sicily for hundreds of years, and is still so today. In the middle ages, Messina was the main port for departing knights and kings headed off to fight in the crusades. Messina is rich in cultural background and home to some of the most extravagant architecture in all of Sicily. Messina has a mild and temperate climate, with hot summers and cold winters.

The city is also home to dozens of museums and historical monuments such as the Temple of San Fransesco d’Assisi, and the Messina Regional Museum.
A favorite among families with children is the Aquarium of Messina. The aquarium houses large amounts of corals, sea anemones and starfish among a large variety of domestic and tropical fish, sharks, and invertebrates. The aquarium is located in the middle of the Mezzini Villa, and is convenient to travel to by bus or cab.
