Matera Italy is a World Heritage Site and for good reason; it is home to the ancient town of Sassi di Matera which is believed to be the first human settlement in Italy. Matera is situated in the Basilicata region of Italy. At first examination Matera just seems like your average Southern Italian town; it is only when you take some time to explore that the beauty and historical significance of the place hits you.

Sassi di Matera

Sassi di Matera is the most important destination on any visitor’s itinerary when they visit Matera. The name of this location literally means, ‘The Stones of Matera’ and it is made up of prehistoric cave dwellings; these are actually dug into the rocks. The most amazing thing about the location is that you have had continued occupancy in some of the houses for as long as 9,000 years. As well as being a UNESCO site it has also been used as a film location; the movie ‘The Passion of Christ’ was filmed here.

The Amazing Dining Experiences in Matera

There are some great dining experiences available in Matera. Some of the most interesting restaurants are in Sassi; here you can eat in one of the cave habitats or sit out on the terraces and admire the view. Local food uses strong spices and pungent aromas. Many dishes will have peppers and goat’s cheese is also a favourite.

Other Things to See in Matera

Matera is also renowned for its huge selection of churches; many claim that some of these are the first churches ever created by Christians. These places of worship range from grand cathedrals to churches in caves. For people who are interested in the history of Christian worship these places provide fascinating glimpses of the past.

Another well-liked tourist attraction is Tramontano Castle; this was once the home of the Count of Matera back in the 16^th century. The castle was never completely finished because the Count was assassinated before completion. There is also an interesting underground reservoir nearby.

Festa della Madonna Bruna

The festival of the Madonna is considered one of the most fascinating of all Italian festivals. It takes place on July the 2^nd each year and the whole town takes on a festive mood. Apparently this festival first began under instructions of Pope Urban the Sixth back in 1389. The festival of the Madonna is said to commemorate a visitation of the Virgin Mary to a local peasant woman. Not only did this important visitor appear, but legend has it that she turned herself into a statue which is still worshiped; the festival is in honour of this statue.

The festival of the Madonna is a spectacular affair with many of the locals dressing up in traditional costumes; there are also lots of fireworks.

Matera Italy is a wonderful location and well worth visiting if you are in Southern Italy. The city offers some fascinating glimpses into the past; some would say that it is like seeing a living past.
