Abruzzo is a region in central Italy (with a western border less than 50 miles from Rome), beautiful with natural and historic wonders, that has thus far been able to escape mass tourism and all the negativity that comes with it. Abruzzo is rich in medieval flavor, with a large amount of castles and medieval towns. It’s capital, L’Aquila, is filled with history, is convienient to stay in (not far from most tourist attractions), and is world renowned for its wonderful restaurants.
Abruzzo is home to over 21 ski areas, including Roccaraso, Campo Felice, and Campo Imperatore. Most of Abruzzo’s ski resorts are located high region in the Apennines. Because of winter percipitation patterns, the Apennines often see more snow than the Alps, making them a wonderful vacation spot for skiers and snowboarders alike.
To complement its higher elevations, Abruzzo is also home to 129 km of long, sandy beach along the coastline. Dotted along these beaches are Abruzzo’s famous beach resorts including Vasto on the southern coast, Martinsicuro to the north, and Silvi Marina in the center whose sand is considered among some of the best in Italy.
One third of Abruzzo is designated parkland. This leaves Abruzzo filled with miles and miles of backpacking trails throughout some of the parks that lie either wholly or partially within Abruzzo.
Abruzzo is an excellent destination for families or for couples who are looking to get away and experience a very diverse region of Italy. With so much to do in one area, there is truly something for everyone. Whether you enjoy the outdoors, sandy beaches, long snow-packed slopes or more of a laid back, cultural tour, Abruzzo is sure to be an excellent vacation spot to experience the true Italy.
