Catania lies on the east coast of Sicily, facing the Ionian sea. Once under roman rule, this city is full of beautiful historic wonders and sites that most will never have the pleasure of seeing. Catania is home to nearly 300,000 residents, and is home to many landmarks, more so than almost any other region of Italy.

The city itself is built on cooled layers of lava, and below what is now current day Catania lies the Roman city that preceded it, and the Greek city that preceded that. The Greek-Roman Theatre is a favorite among tourists, and although it lays in shambles today, the magnificence of what was is preserved. Also located in Catania is the Roman Amphitheatre in Stesichorus Square, another favorite among tourists.

 Catania is home to countless churches and abbeys whose architecture amazes those who have the pleasure of being able to see them. Many buildings in Catania are built with a Roman influence, and tower high above the streets with huge doorways and giant columns.

 Catania is a great destination for those who would like to enjoy sight seeing, specifically of beautiful ancient architecture. Catania is a city with an old Roman influenced flavor, and is famous for its traditional restaurants and amazing scenery. Catania seems to be more of a destination for couples and single travellers, and is traditionally a less attractive tourist location for families with small children, although teenagers and young adults have found Catania to be a beautifully and culturally intersting place to visit.
