Visiting Lazio

Lazio is a region located in Central Italy, and is often known for its history, art, architecture, and culture. It wasn’t until 1870 that Lazio became a part of the Nation of Italy. Before, Lazio had been a part of many power struggles, including several decades worth by Rome. With Lazio lies Rome, the regions most well known and visited city. Rome, of course, at one point was the heart and soul of the Roman empire, and today is a beautiful city rich with historical significance.

The Colosseum (originally the Flavian amphitheater) is Rome’s most famous tourist attraction. The Colosseum is located in the center of Rome, and was the largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire when it was built. It was built around 70 AD and is to this day considered one of the greatest architectural achievements in the modern world. The sight of the Colosseum is awe inspiring. It still has heavy ties to the Roman Catholic Church. Every Good Friday the pope leads a torch-lit “Way of the cross’ procession to the center of the amphitheater. No vacation to this region is complete without a trip to see the Colosseum.

Another popular tourist attraction in Rome is the Roman Forum. the entire city of Rome was once formed around this as a central location. The forum served as a square where the citizens of Rome gathered to protest for justice and faith. The Forum was home to some of the most important structures in the vast Roman Empire including The Old Republic where the senate and republican government began. The Roman Forum was considered the be the center, the heart and soul of the Roman Empire.

If you are vacationing to Lazio, you probably are going to be in, or around Rome. Rome is an amazing city, rich in history, culture, art and architecture like you will never see anywhere else on Earth.
